After writing a series of articles on the Americans with Disablities Act for the Anderson (South Carolina) Independent-Mail daily newspaper in October 1989—ten months before President George H. Bush signed the legislation into law—I made the ADA, assistive technology, and other topics related to disabilities rights my leading specialty when I began freelancing full time. I eventually published 79 articles on the subject, earned a Master of Humanities in Disabilities Studies from Wright State University, and became a member of the President's Committee on Employment of People With Disabilities's Communications Subcommittee.
